ICO starts with the construction of eleven wind turbines at the Southern Inlet Terminal

On Monday, August 31, the first of 11 wind turbines was installed at the Southern Inlet Terminal. The wind turbines are 150 meters high and the wings have a diameter of 117 meters. The total capacity of 44 megawatts will be used for terminal operations, docked ships and the local community. The green electricity will also be used to charge the 308 electric charging points on terminal.
For this project, the company ICO Windpark was established, a joint venture of ICO (37.5%), Engie (37.5%) and the Port Authority Zeebrugge (25%). This will be the largest Flemish onshore wind project at one industrial site, operated by one operator. “The eleven turbines will produce no less than 110 gigawatt hours per year, enough to provide 30,000 families with electricity and avoid the emission of 50,000 tons of CO2,” according to Engie Benelux.
The entire construction process is a major operation. The construction of the foundations already started in September last year. On August 17, all parts were unloaded directly from the ship at the terminal in one day. The aim is to install 2 turbines per week until the end of September.
